Choose your province or town to read about the roads there and request quotes.

Gauteng

Gauteng packs more cars, trucks and minibus taxis onto its roads than any other province, so tow trucks are always busy. The N1 Ben Schoeman Highway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, the N3 through Ekurhuleni, the N12, the N14 to Krugersdorp, the R21 to O.R. Tambo and the Johannesburg ring road all carry heavy commuter traffic, and rush hour breakdowns and fender benders are daily events. Industrial areas such as Germiston, Wadeville, Kya Sand and Rosslyn keep truck and heavy recovery crews busy. Summer afternoon storms, hail and flooding in low spots make roads slippery, while winter mornings are often hazy with smoke. Dealers move stock on flatbeds, and families fit tow bars for caravans heading to the coast.

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga carries two very different kinds of traffic. On the Highveld, coal trucks and fuel tankers grind along the N4, N11 and N12 around eMalahleni, Middelburg and Secunda, and roads such as the R35 and R38 can be rough, so truck breakdowns and heavy recovery are a large part of the work. East of Belfast the N4 drops down to Mbombela and the Lowveld, and holiday traffic heads to Kruger, Hazyview and the Panorama Route with caravans, boats on trailers and 4x4s. Mist on the escarpment around Dullstroom and Graskop, Lowveld heat and summer storms all affect the roads. Farmers move citrus, timber and machinery, and many visitors need a tow far from the nearest town.

North West

North West mixes platinum mining, maize farming and weekend escapes from Gauteng. The N4 Platinum Highway runs from Pretoria past Brits and Rustenburg towards Zeerust and the Botswana border, and it carries ore trucks, mine buses and long distance freight. The N12 links Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp with Johannesburg, and the N14 heads west through Ventersdorp and Lichtenburg. Mine vehicles, farm bakkies and tractors on gravel roads, and weekend traffic to Hartbeespoort Dam and the Pilanesberg all add to the call outs. Summer brings hail and heavy storms, winter brings cold mornings and dust on dry roads. Long distances between towns mean many tows are charged by the kilometre, and trailers for cattle and machinery are common.

Limpopo

Limpopo is a long way from anywhere, and that shapes towing here. The N1 runs north from Bela-Bela through Mokopane, Polokwane and Makhado to Musina and the Beitbridge border, and it carries a steady stream of freight trucks heading into Africa. Long queues and breakdowns near the border are common. The R71 to Tzaneen and Phalaborwa, the R81 to Giyani and the R510 to Lephalale's coal and power station area link farms, mines and game lodges. Heat in the Lowveld, summer storms and mist on the Magoebaskloof Pass all affect drivers. Tourists towing caravans to the bushveld, farmers moving fruit and cattle, and mine fleets all need tows, recovery and trailers, often over long distances.

Northern Cape

The Northern Cape is the largest province with the fewest people, so a breakdown here can mean a tow of hundreds of kilometres. The N14 runs from Vryburg through Kuruman and Upington to Springbok, the N12 crosses Kimberley, the N10 passes Upington and De Aar, and the N7 carries traffic north to Namibia. Iron ore and manganese trucks around Kathu, Postmasburg and Hotazel add heavy recovery work. Karoo and Kalahari heat strains engines and tyres in summer, while winter nights are cold. Tourists towing caravans to Namaqualand in flower season, the Augrabies Falls and the Kgalagadi also need help. Gravel roads are common, and dust and loose stones cause punctures and damage.

Free State

The Free State sits on the main road between Gauteng and the coast, so much of its towing comes from through traffic. The N1 passes Kroonstad, Winburg and Bloemfontein on the way to Cape Town, and the N3 runs past Villiers and Harrismith towards Van Reenen's Pass and Durban. Long weekend and holiday traffic brings breakdowns, caravan trouble and crashes. The N8 links Bloemfontein with Kimberley and Lesotho, and the N5 crosses the eastern Free State to Bethlehem. Farming dominates, so bakkies, tractors and grain trucks are common. Winter fog and frost on the Highveld, and summer storms and hail, make driving harder. Clarens and the Golden Gate area draw weekend visitors with trailers and motorbikes.

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal sits on South Africa's busiest freight route. The N3 climbs from the Durban port past Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg and Howick, then up Van Reenen's Pass towards Gauteng, carrying a steady flow of trucks. Breakdowns, jack-knifed trucks and long queues on Town Hill and Field's Hill are well known. The N2 runs along the coast from Port Shepstone through Durban to Ballito and Richards Bay. Coastal rain, summer humidity and mist on the Midlands make driving harder. Holiday traffic to the South Coast and the Drakensberg brings caravans and boats, while sugar cane and timber trucks work the farm roads. Dealers, panel beaters, couriers and families all need tows, car transport and trailers here.

Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape is big and varied, from busy port cities to quiet rural roads. Gqeberha and East London are motor manufacturing centres, so car carriers, parts trucks and dealership stock move on the N2 between them. The N2 also runs through Makhanda and Mthatha towards KwaZulu-Natal, and the Wild Coast stretch is known for livestock on the road and potholes. The N6 links East London to Queenstown and Bloemfontein, and the N9 and N10 cross the Karoo past Graaff-Reinet and Cradock. Coastal wind and rain, mist in the Amathole hills and Karoo heat all affect drivers. Surfers at Jeffreys Bay, farmers in the Karoo and families on holiday all need tows and trailers.

Western Cape

The Western Cape combines a busy metro with some of the country's most famous holiday routes. In Cape Town, the N1, N2 and N7 carry commuter traffic past the airport, Bellville and Montague Gardens, and breakdowns in rush hour are common. Sir Lowry's Pass on the N2 and the Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 near Paarl are well-known trouble spots. The Garden Route along the N2 through George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, and the R62 through the Klein Karoo, draw caravans, boats and motorbikes. Winter rain, strong summer wind, mist on the passes and Karoo heat all affect drivers. Wine farms, fruit growers and the fishing industry need trucks and trailers.
